Stability
1. Colorless liquid, flammable, almost odorless, with bitter taste. It is a high polarity organic solvent, can be mixed with water in any ratio, except petroleum ether, can dissolve general organic solvents. It can absorb hydrogen chloride 30% (wt); nitrogen dioxide 30% (wt); sulfur dioxide 65% (wt) at 20℃. It has strong hygroscopicity and can absorb moisture equivalent to 70% of its own weight from air at 20℃ when the relative humidity is 60%. The product is a weak oxidizer, dimethyl sulfoxide without water is not corrosive to metals. When containing water, it is corrosive to iron; copper and other metals, but not to aluminum. Stable to bases. When heated in the presence of acid, a small amount of methyl mercaptan; formaldehyde; dimethyl sulfide; methanesulfonic acid and other compounds are produced. It decomposes at high temperature and reacts violently with chlorine, and burns in air with a light blue flame.
Chemical properties: Dimethyl sulfoxide reduction to produce methyl sulfide. Oxidized to dimethyl sulfoxide by the action of strong oxidizing agents.
2. Dimethyl sulfoxide reacts with chlorinated substances such as cyanuric chloride, benzoyl chloride, acetyl chloride, phenyl iodide chloride, thionyl chloride, thionyl chloride, phosphorus trichloride, etc. when contacted, a violent exothermic decomposition reaction occurs. Combined with nitric acid, it produces (CH3)2SO-NHO3. interaction with barium carbonate regenerates dimethyl sulfoxide. With concentrated hydroiodic acid to produce dimethyl sulfoxide compounds.
3. Dimethyl sulfoxide is absorbent and needs to be dried before use.
